Sculpted Cloth
A series of pieces inspired by the subtle elegance of cloth. Each piece is hand sculpted with each curve, crease, and fold being individually placed and carved. This is the next iteration of my style of cloth, iterating on the "Satin Draped Vases" body of work. This body of work added motion, geometry, and gravity to the sculptures; adding a unique aspect of fluidity to each piece.
My sculpting process! The cloth is all hand sculpted using coils and involves no burnout or actual sheets. The cloth and volume is all implied through sculpture.

Sculpted Cloth [1 of 3], 2023
This piece plays with the concepts of flowing cloth, geometry, and gravity. It is a wheel thrown moon jar that has been heavily modified with sculptural techniques. This piece depicts the draping of a square cloth over a round shape, and showcases how gravity affects the corners of a cloth with unique folds and intertwines. Every single fold and curve is manually placed and sculpted with depth and fine detail. The matte glaze gives an appearance of genuine satin.

Sculpted Cloth [2 of 3], 2023
This moonjar was inspired by wind blown cloth, wet fabric, and fluid dynamics. It depicts how a wet satin sheet would cling to a round surface when blown from single direction. The sculpted curves and folds stack based on the artist’s interpretation of high and low pressure zones in a fluid flow simulation.

Sculpted Cloth [3 of 3], 2023
This piece began as a tall and elegant bottle form and includes a dynamic range of hand sculpted fabric folds that hug the piece’s curves. The sculpting showcases a fabric succumbing to both its own weight and an imaginary wind, piling at the back of the piece.
